How many miles and whats the condition of the rest of the rig? Probably less expensive to slap a bone yard motor in it, versus brand new everything.

When removed, take it to a reputable machine shop that specializes in this type of work.

They can do a thorough check of the head for straightness, cracks (magnaflux testing) etc. and the internals on that head.

Then install a new headgasket with a verified head.

You do NOT want to just replace the headgasket without having a shop checking that head over!
Magnaflux and Zyglo are never the way to go, pressure testing is the only way to be 100% sure its in working condition.

And sorry to hear about the engine

You may be right, and i AM looking into that. I'm mulling the idea of buying my wife a newer daily driver, hijacking HER 99 Cherokee, and turning this one into my SHTF, off-road truck.
The rest of the truck is pushing 200,000k miles. This is the second motor it's seen, but I'm finding out that the mechanic who installed it is a complete con-artist. (that's a story for a different thread)
I've got a buddy who owns a machine shop, so my rebuild cost will be substantially lower than most, and the knowledge I'll gain will a bigger bonus. He's coming over this morning, and we're going to discuss options...

Thanks guys, I'll keep you posted!
