I saw a few members running aussie lockers. Front or rear? any comments pros, cons. did anyone running it in front get the manual hub conversion or just running locker? I was considering one for front. how was the install!! thanks

 

i just got mine in the mail. From what i heard/read they are suppose to be better than lockrights,... I'm waiting for it to warm up before I install it. I got one for the front[Dana 30]. and if i like it, I'll get a matching one from the rear[Chrysler 8.25].

 

I spent quite awhile on my install, mainly because of old parts. I should have ordered stuff like a pinion shaft and some thrust washers before I started to pull everything apart. But it is fairly easy to do.

 

I've got Aussies front and rear. I love them. The only thing I don't like is that the front DS and all Diff internals spin in 2WD drive, now. It's gonna cause a little faster wear and it has cut down on my HWY. MPG a little bit. Now, here's the good news. The XJ is like night and day WAAAAAAAAAAY better off road so, that more than compensates for the small loss in MPG I have suffered. The road manners of the Aussie are great once you get over the inital getting used to havelockers. Very faint clicking in corners when the locker unlocks. That's about it. I never hear my front locker on the road because I have a front axle cable disco that I built.

My HB front axle disco write was in the XJ Write ups section.....but, then so was my HB front sway bar quick disco write....and it doesn't appear to be there, anymore. Check there. if it's not there post up and I'll put the pics I have of it on this thread.

ya im running an aussie in my front dana 30. on the road you cant tell its even there. just make sure to take corners easy until you get used to the locker in the front. but it is absolutely night and day offroad! the install was a pain for me. i couldnt get the carrier out. i took it to a buddies house that has a car lift and then we tag teamed it and managed to get it out. when i get my dana 44 i will be throwing an aussie in it also.

 

Brandon, now, you have to go to Tahuya. The whole reason Tampa wants to go is to try out his new Aussie Locker. see, you need to try yours out, too. I think Aussie Locker should send the CF PACNORWEST crew some stickers, T-shirts or something. There are 3 and soon to be 4 of us sportin Aussie Lockers in our XJs.

 

i already tested my locker out. i went up to evans. it kinda sucked though cuz on the first trail i had too much traction and my tie rod bent in half and was touching the ground. i fixed it and then went home. but for the short amount of time i got to use it it worked awesome!!! night and day!!!

 

I did the same thing the first time out. Didn't bend down. It actually bent in toward the front diff. and was rubbing on it. Check out XJ write ups section, Home Brew Tierod Beef. I did a write up on what I did to beef up my tierod for around $40. That was including the cost of a new JY tierod.

 

I've been 4wheeling 2 X sense the beef up and it is still straight as it ever was.

 

beefin up tie rods good point i got pretty good at it when I raced demo cars and trucks, any other weak point anyone has noticed

 

The only other thing I keep breaking is tierod ends on my adjustable track bar but, that is because it is made for a 4.5 inch lift and I added a 1.5 inch BB to my XJ. So, now I need the dropped frame mount to put it back at the right angle. Thought I could go cheap. With an XJ, I was wrong.

 

i am having my buddy build me a 3/8" thick tierod with new ends. then i wont have that problem! he makes some beefy stuff.
