im gonna cut two inches off each side. i fit through everything just fine i just would prefer it to be the same width as the rear. it would make it easier to know where the front tires are

 

Just an update.
Front end is in the process of being cut down. Replaced balljoints and cut down steering. Waiting to get the front end back and then get the shafts cut and resplined. Then will be ready for a run somewhere

 

Questions for you. I'd like to go full width on mine. Do you drive it on the street? How fast have you gotten it up to? How's it handle? Mine is my DD but keep in mind that I MAYBE put 10k a year on it and that's a busy year. Thanks!

 

I am running full width and drive it everywhere. It will drive 75 down the freeway with no problems. It accualy drives and handles better than when it had the stock axles in it.

 

You have to remember that eventhough the axles are full wiidth they were one a vehicle that drove normal speeds and were highway vehicles so they will drive fine on the road. Mine I have gotten to about 70 mph with no shakes or anything. The wider axles make the rig more stable on the road. I don't drive mine on the road much because the cops around here like to right no flare tickets. But all in all I love driving it and love the full width axles

Ya I like the whole full width idea. And it eases my mind knowing that it will be pretty hard to break my axles. And if you don't want to be so wide just get a ford 9 inch and a 44. That's a good combo too. If you would like any other pictures I can try to get you some too

 

yeah i'm planning on the ford 9 and 44. what axles did you use again? i've read the whole thing god knows how long ago...

 

I threw a full float dana 60 in the rear and ford dana 44 up front

GREAT WRITE UP!!! I just finished reading this whole thing from the start. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinion and you have you own reasons for going with leafs, BUT, going away from coils is like wipping your butt before you crap. You can do it that way but it doesn't make a lot of sence. Either way I love your rig. You did a great job.

 

Hes still getting great flex though, at least from the pics and those axles are pretty tough

 

thanks guys so far i am enjoying the leafs more than coils. nothing negative to say about them yet. they ride smoother than my old coil setup, alot cheaper, flex just as good if not better, and have had no axle wrap yet. i will post some pictures when i get my front end back installed. i am picking it up tonight then gotta weld some leaf perches on it and redo some steering and she will be good to go

 

alright i have an update on the jeep.

i just got the front axle housing back this evening from being cut down 3 inches on both sides and rotated the pinion up for a little better angle out of my low pinion 44. i got it up under the jeep and tomorow i wil be welding the leaf perches to the housing and probably start assembling the front end.

these are the only pictures i have so far. will post more when i get some. front axle shafts cut down 3 inches and resplined by Doug Dye in Federal Way, and a set of Alloy USA Xjoints. (they have a 3 year waranty so i thought what the heck they are only $45)

 

What did it run you to narrow the axle shafts? I need to have a rear D60 axle narrowed. I was going to take it to Dutchman.
