that smoke was most likely from wiring insulation burning.
You say it come from your dash?
Go to home depot and get a 100ft spool of 16 or 18 ga wire, and a 100 pack of butt splices and a wire stripping tool that has a splice crimper built in, all that should run you under $40.
...then...
Take that dash off and find all the fried wires, they're probably shorting together or shorting to some metal under the dash.
It's gunna take a few hours, but just splice in all new wires where you see burnt insulation, play it safe, if it even looks halfway iffy, splice in a new wire.
I'd bet that will fix it.
Also, look at all the wires you can under the hood and make sure they look O.K.
ah, I just read the rest of your post and saw you already checked out all the wires under the dash...
Maybe all the ones that run IN the dash and not just on top of it...
I'm still willing to bet there are some fried wires some where...

Motor mounts are pretty easy to change, the passenger side is a little hareder cause of the limitd space. Use a floor jack and block of wood and raise the engine/trans. just a little bit. You will have it done in no time.

yeah, mounts are easy.
The way were headed, it's going to be nice and chilly this weekend, especially up redington, better bring some sweat shirts...
And yeah BS, I had to say it, it doesn't sound like anything else. I've got pretty thorough experience with vehicle electronic (not formal, just from having to fix so many dang electrical gremlins), and it sounds to me like you fried a few wires. Good luck finding them...

Dude, that sucks something hard...
I wouldn't think you would get rod knock just from over heating, but who knows, it's worth checking out.
Your head is probably warped too...
So, sorry BS, even if you got your stuff sorted out, looks like we are not going.
We'll have to do Chiva falls some other time (Not Janurary, everyone is gunna be busy...).
Am I the only guy who actually fixed his jeep last weekend instead of breaking it? Lol, jk.

My brothers beater 1985 Celica does someting like that, the head lights never turn off, everything we have checked is OK, and believe me, we have checked EVERYTHING. He has to pull the relay for the headlights every time he parks his car lest his battery die...
