I knew it was geared low, but wow! What cases is he running, & at 223:1 how often do you really use low low?

That's a nice setup tho not that you would use low low all that much, but (& correct me if I'm wrong) the options of having 47:1, 98:1, & 223:1 would be real nice!

I might take you up on the offer to drive her chandler... granted she ever gets outta the garage

i think your correct tristin thats what i know about the rig too.

and ryan most don't use all that low actually a few i know are getting rid of the 4-7 case and just using duel stock gears cause it's a useless low.

yeah, everyone I have talked to like to have it for screwing around... but either uses the 4.7-1, or the 2.28-1, and hardly ever use them both in low... But its fun to have! the TOY 4.7- gears are kind of known for braking over time as well (but have a life time warranty) I would probably opt for 2.28 and 2.28 which gives you 5.2-1 double low... but either way doublers are cool!

Ok so back to the stock XJ the 36:1 you mentioned having is your aw4 in 1st 2.80, then stock 231J 2.82 (I thought the 231 put out 2.72???) Giving us giving us a little higher gears or is your case putting out 2.82?

For a stick shift, it is worth having a 4:1 case in the mix of doublers IMO. Mine is a 3.8 and 2.72 reduction box. My double low final crawl ratio is 139:1. I assumed it would be a novelty gear, but it turns out I use it all the time. Granted, this is a lot "faster" than 223:1. I use 3.8 through most trails, and pop the reduction box down when I need to get my crawl on .

In an auto rig, I would assume the double low would be less useful, however I have chatted with a couple of people with the same 3.8 and 2.72 setup and they say they still use double low regularly. Hard to say...but I am sure the 5.4 double low on two 2.62 cases would be plenty in an auto.

Your right, I typed it wrong... its 2.72-1 for the Jeep t/case's both 242-231. now add a 4-1 in the mix...

My ratio is 2.8 x 2.72 x 4.56 = 34.72-1
with a 4-1 box 2.8 x 4 x 4.56 = 51.07
with both 2.8 x 2.72 x 4 x 4.56 = 138.91

I agree, It really comes down to the fact that its always better to have more options, But how can I get all I need for a price I can afford lol I know for a FACT that If/when I have a Doube low I will use it... I would have used it on that huge ledge on MM, Rock chucker, moab rim, and the large ledge on Cliff hanger... Its nice to have "super low" Its just not needed every obsticle.

If I had to pick ONE low ratio it would be 4-1. but Teraflex kit just isn;t reliable enough for my liking in a single reduction box setup... makes me want a D300 lol

Think I'd have to feel a 231/300 crawl before dumping the doe on a 4:1

Now would it be worth the stress of having a 231/231 (chains) just to go from the 90:1 you'ld get with a 231/300 vs the 94:1 of a 231/231??? Is the 231 really that weak?

Also the 231HD doesn't change the output ratio, just width of chain wright?

Yup that is right. When I first got it from the creator, I didn't know about the rear case only option. Lol Now 98% of the time its rear case only on obstacles. On the trail its stock. Only time I use double low is to pull onto obstacles or technical sections where tire placement is required.
