I'm having a problem and the greater message board is not being very helpful. I thoguht I would try this local group.
When I bought my 91, the front drive shaft was out because after a transfer case swap, the previous owner said there was a vibration. I put it back in Saturday and yes, there is a bad vibration that starts at about 50 mph in 2wd, but in 4 high, it's not there, even at highway speeds. In 4 High, the vibration does kick in only when the accellerator is let off. but under a load, like up a hill, accelleration, or decelerating against the engine, there is no vibration. This makes me think it may not be the shaft itself being out of balance, or bent, as if it was, it would happen all the time. A neighbor said it might be the tranny mount, but the vibration feels liek the front end, but not neccesarily in the steering.
There is no vibration at all when the shaft is out, so I'm thinking that the issue may be u-joints on the shaft. What do you all think?
Also, will it hurt anything to drive at highway speeds in 4 hi? I'm going to drop the shaft again, but I have been enjoying being able to go off pavement the last few days. If it doesn't hurt anything to drive in 4 Hi, then I can drive it for a couple more days until I have time to drop it and buy the parts.
Any help is appreciated!
