did some searching and found an edited picture of precisely what i was imagining. It wouldnt be hard at all to adapt an mj tailgate to an xj, and all that would be needed for the liftgate is a little chopping, fab the lock from the bottom half onto the top half, and you have an xj with a tailgate.

I"ve seen a few chops that looked great. The one I liked was when the guy incorperated the back hatch behind the seat. Lots of fab work and welding though...

If i was gonna chop the jeep and move the hatch up behind the seats, I'd find a hatch in the yard that had glass that opened. I don't know why more guys don't do that. I wish the XJ had that ability.

I know a lot of guys do it, just something about taking the structural integrity out of the body that bothers me...

had a huge crack in the windshield when i bought her, my insurance agent helped me out, she did me the favor of telling me to add comprehensive coverage, then to file a claim for the windshield damage a few days later, and she'd handle the rest. original price i was going to get was $200. total cost after comp coverage to my insurance was $210, but i only paid $50 at the time of service. so for $10 extra, i got the convenience of paying it in installments, rather than all at once.

meh, Its not high up on the list of things to be done. Its a single crack down the center of the windsheild on the inside. I don't even notice it.

no, the rearview mirror fell off so I took it to a local glass shop. The local glass guy used 50x the glue needed and created a ring of glue around the rearview mount. It fell of a month or so later. Then last winter it cracked due to the temp difference. You can tell the glue ring caused it, the crack clearly starts at the ring and runs straight down.
From now on, I'll use the glass guy here at work, he beats everyone's prices by a bunch, he owns his own company and he's a great guy.

I guess no one told him it only takes a drop or 2 to get it to stick.
I gotta find a good glass shop, my ZJ's winshield is pitted, wonder if they have a way of buffing them out???

I can give you my guys number if you want. He'll come to you. Generally with scratches/pitts the rule is if you can feel it with your nail, its to far gone.

if i wanted an open rear id go buy another truck..... i think having a chopped jeep with an open rear is just plain DUMB! very very unique and i commend anyone who tackles the job and does it right..... but whats so great about it? once its all said and done you get hardly any room in the back. id feel very closed in if i sat in the back seat, i mean hell you might as well go buy an avalanche if you want to have an open rear and not have enough room to do a damn thing but maybe a little tiny toolbox and a small bag..
