I don't remember what size the stock speakers were, but my 6.5" Kenwoods fit right in.
And yes, the fronts are 5.25. You can fit 6.5s up there, too, but you may have to trim a little.

Cool, thanks Tim, that's what I needed to know. Looking at going with a 4 channel amp with 3 way speakers front and rear to give it a little bass and good sound quality. I listen to rock and heavy metal so I don't need a lot of bass, just enough to give it a good sound. Think that will work, or should I look more towards a single channel amp and a sub and deal with decent sound from my head and panasonic two way speakers?

Also, my buddy said something about bass blockers to the speakers as to help with sound distortion, whatcha think?

I listen to everything: country, rock, dubstep, metal, pop..even some old hip hop (Outkast era). I'm very glad I installed a sub cause it gave me that variety I needed in my sound. The only experience I have with car audio, though, is from doing my Jeep. I think I'm gonna do component speakers with my next one so I can get more accurate sound, but for what I listen to, I'm definitely still gonna have a sub.
He's talking about a Low Pass Filter. In short, it stops the low notes from going to your speakers. In a system with a sub, this lets the speakers focus on the mid- and high-range notes that they're supposed to produce while all the low notes go to the sub. I plan to use a LPF in my next system, but I don't know if you should use one without a sub. One of these other guys should know more about that sort of system.

x2, and another thing you might want to consider is the amount of junk that gets in doors when off-roading. I'm adding a sound bar right behind my front seats which does a couple of things.
1. It will sound better because it brings the sound closer to your ears
2. Wiring to an amp is easier because you don't have to screw with the door pass-throughs
3. Wiring and speakers will last longer because they aren't exposed to water/dirt/mud/dust and the wiring isn't run through the door pass-through
4. You can use a larger speaker (6 1/2'') without cutting your door panels, the sound bar is much easier to trim.

Mickey, for your tastes I'd recommend components not 2 or 3 ways, the seperation of the highs are VERY noticable and def go with at least a single 8" or 10" sub get a sealed and if you do the front sound bar you can have 4 6.5" speakers which will greatly help the midrange.

Sorry, I meant do the LPF if I only use a sub and leave my speakers as two way. Still leaning towards a 4 channel amp and 3 way speakers. I hate having to crank my stereo to get enough sound over the tires and exhaust, so my main focus of an amp is to have better sound output from my speakers, although a sub would be nice too though. Guess if I want everything, which who doesn't, I bite the bullet and get a 5 channel and do it as I really want.

I agree with the rest, but you don't need to trim to fit 6.5s in a soundbar...at least, not in my '01.

I do plan to look for a place in the dash to install next time. I don't know if there's room for that on the older (Renix) body style, but it should be an improvement over the doors for the reasons you mentioned.

That's what I recommend. I loved my system, and I got that "I did that" smile every time I cranked my stereo. But within a week I was noticing things I wished I'd done better. A LPF was the one that bothered me all the way to the day she rolled. If you do a sub and keep 2-way speakers, do yourself a favor and get a LPF.

I hear ya about the door collecting junk, but I had already planned to weld in some block off plates into the inside of the front fenders behind the tire when I do my rocker replacements. That'll keep most of the crud out and strengthen that area of the fender as well. Plus I hate how my hinges pop and grind after an outing. lol

The sound bar is a good idea too except that a lot of times I have my kids in the back seat and they're watching a movie so we put all the sound up front and the sound bar would defeat that. Bummer dude

Bass blockers are silly if the amp has a good crossover built in. I would go with 4 channel amp, front channels run front speakers, head deck run you rears and the back channel run a sub. Again you can bridge the front channels to run both front and rear too. Most speakers are 4 ohm. You will need an amp that is stable to at least 2ohm.
