I guess I should stick to selling car insurance..
I'd like to give it another whack on Sunday actually. And if I can't get it, maybe someone else will step in and save me, lol

Anyone have a press or an easy way to change u-joints on a front ds? Apparently mine are on the way out and the shop here wants 300+ to replace them.
Get the ball joint press from HF, works great on U-joints

hint...keep threads oiled and it wont bend

x2 BFH, and a good bench nice is nice to support the joint on while you're hammering on the ears

Like Dukie said, hammer on the ears of the joint, not the u joint itself. This will move the joint down and force the cap out the bottom side, while also loosening the needle bearings of the top cap. Repeat side to side and top to bottom until the two caps come off. Then hammer on the u joint itself in a similar motion that you used for on the ears. The caps should come out eventually. Be sure all of the retaining clips are out, I broke a couple getting them out and had to fish the pieces out before hammering. Good luck!

OKay, the verdict is in on the XJ. I need a starter A special thanks to Yellaklein for checking out and diagnosing the problem. The cheapest starter I could find was Advance Auto $139.99 + $30 core - $30 coupon=$139.99 + tax.

The only issue I have is that I barely survive off of $1200 per month supporting 2 people. This week I only have 1 child to watch instead of the normal 4 which gives me extra $$$. I looked at a few on Ebay, but I'm not sure about making purchases from Ebay. Could I temporarily get away with one from the JY or would that be a waste of money? Lastly does anyone have a starter for a 2000 XJ just laying around looking for a new home? I would really like to get back on the road by next week and I have money, just not enough to get the starter from Advance this week.

Mava any starter for the 4.0L engine will work - any year

strange it would just stop working though...did he try tapping on it and check the relay/battery connections?

He did all of that. He had a BFH tapping and nothing. He was in contact with PTMIke while he was checking it out. Is it safe to buy from Ebay, found a few new ones for less than $100 with free shipping. Most have 30 day warranty.
