It comes off your transfer case towards the rear drive shaft. The stock rear won't work so you can use the front drive shaft off another XJ as your new rear.

Correct. think of it this way: You are eliminating the slip yoke from the rear tailcone of the TC. You have to add that slip back in which is done with the use of a front DS which has the slip built in.

You are basically making the rear just like the front.

I've found a Junkyard close by with cheap prices. I wanted to know how to identify a Dana 44 to see if they have any. Any help?

The front doesn't have a slip yoke. You're eliminating the slip yoke in the rear by making it use the same system as the front.
