mine sits at 12 sometimes also. Don't worry about it till i drops down till like 10, then you know its screwed. You can try cleaning the battery terminals - you prob just have a poor connection

no. your wheel bearing is not sealed.
x2. on a jeep, if it isnt gushing, screeching, howling (depending on the howl), you are fine. oh yeah, dont forget popping.

Not sure how many people own Vaio's and since Sony likes to over protect their gear you might have to find the exact laptop model disk to install the operating system on the pc.
I'm sure you've tried this but can you download the iso for the disk from their support site?
You can also install the os from XP or win 7 install disk if you have a copy lying around you don't necessarily need the sony recovery disk.

I personally would completely dismantle the axle and send each component out to a forensic lab to try and identify where the grease came from, then inspect that specific area under great scrutiny using an electron microscope to see if there was an actual problem.

I like where your head's at. He should be sure he sends the tire too, just to be safe.
