It all depends on what the motor is going to require work wise. Do you need just rings/gaskets, or are you going to need a new crank/rods/pistons/ ect??? I have $1300 total in this rebuild, I bought another motor for the rebuild so I could still run the Cherokee. I'm going this route for the dependability factor, I could have just dropped the motor I bought in as is and probably gotten plenty of use out of it.
Rebuild kits can run up to $4-500 or more, machining costs would be dependant on shop labor costs in your area, what the block will require (it may just need to be honed which will be cheaper and you can do the honing yourself, or you may need to get it bored/sleeved which will cost more money), and if you need to get another head.
It can be rebuilt in the jeep, but again, that would be dependant on the condition of the cylinder walls and of course would be even cheaper still. I have done rebuilds with the motor in the vehicle, but did not get as much mileage off of it, and it can be a PITA.
My guesstimate of time would be +/- 2 weeks with pulling the motor, machine shop, ordering parts, putting it together and dropping it back in.
It would have been cheaper if I would have bought a reman, but as I said before, I know it will be done right

Lots of very helpful advice so far, thank you.

I got off shift yesterday morning, don't work til Friday night. But they called an All Hands for this VTC so everyone had to show up today for 2 hours. I worked Halloween, and I'm on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. I get New Year's Eve and Day off, though, so I'm cool with it.

No worries, man. Trying to install my bored TB, but one of the Torx stripped on a sensor. So I'm gonna try to drill it out, and run it with one screw a whole 3 blocks to Advance. Wish me luck.
EDIT: Cordless drill with a Torx bit took it right out. Think I may have a bent screwdriver. Oh well, it's Craftsman. My new TB is installed. time to test drive and see if it whistles.

Definitely sounds better and feels smoother. I've been having issues with my fuel system, and it almost feels stock now..but it may just be a good night for my Jeep. Time will tell. I do get a slight whistle, and it doesn't bother me. That's easy to fix if you rough the edges of the butterfly valve, but I'm not worried about it. I get it at 1100rpm and in the high 2000s, but I rarely notice in deceleration, and I have to look for the sound. I'm happy with it so far, but I don't know that it was worth the money for me personally, with my stock air system and my other problems. It certainly isn't hurting.
