The reason I sought out this forum in the first place was to find out if I could get it running nice and cool for the summer and enjoy it before baby comes and also to ask real life potential jeep buyers and current jeep owners what it is worth. The beauty of craigslist and ebay is they are free and I can adjust the ad as needed. I can always come down on my price as i gather more useful input. I know I can never go up on a price. That is why I started where I did.

Understood.

The thing I most worry about with LOW MILEAGE Jeeps is the dryrot that can happen in hoses, seals, bushings, etc from sitting for long periods.

It's 24 years old....that means, if we are to trust the mileage, it got about 2400 miles a year. Either it did, or it had a long spat of sitting...in which case, things will begin to fail, quickly.

This is why I would not pay a price like that for it.

It is not that it is not a purdy truck....it is because I know what I am in for.

But I say go for it. If you are not in a hurry, what does it hurt?

Also, I am open to the fact that I will probably find people here who could love and appreciate a Jeep. And maybe they can't afford 5 grand but they have a reliable Japanese make in their stable that doesn't get the use it once did. Lets say they had a Honda Civic/Accord, Toyota Camry/Corolla, Nissan Maxima/Sentra, old Lexus ES 300, old Acura Integra with four doors or a reliable wagon of some sort that would be well suited for a guy with a family on the way. Wouldn't they maybe want to know about my Jeep as a possible trade? I was gifted this vehicle by a man I have known as a neighbor for a few years who wanted to help me out as he winds down his earthly affairs. I am not opposed to helping make someone else happy while insuring I have a good, four door, economical, gas efficient car to cart by new baby girl around in come August 10th.

Not trying to be rude, but you sound like you're incredibly defensive about all this. Nobody is accusing you of anything anymore, and we're just trying to give insight. Personally, I wouldn't pay $5k for an XJ cause I know stuff is gonna break no matter how well-maintained it is. Again, that's just my opinion.

I do not believe that a 1988 Jeep Cherokee Limited is the base model. I believe it is a higher tier model, i.e. an upgraded edition. Can someone with no horse in this race look at my 1988 Jeep Cherokee Limited with inline 6 cylinder engine and
vin. number 1JCMT7897JT174893and tell me if the picture of my gauge cluster and the picture of my Jeep are a match of what should have come together from the factory. If you do not believe they are a match can you please explain why. Thank you. I would love to have accurate information without all the noise that comes with it.
That IS a limited - you can tell by the colored flares, gold wheels, and body panels. Limited was the TOP level trim in 88, and came with the 4.0, full cluster, and pretty much all the luxury/power options

that being said i've never seen an 88 with that few miles on the odometer, and it HAS been replaced at some point - the 88 had a different looking odometer

No offense taken, just wanted to let some of the few who have expressed interest that I am open to any reasonable options without having to private message the select few individually

and i was told by infohound that it was a base model. hence why i made the comment on the cluster. then everything spun out of control. it happens.

and 5500 for a vehicle that had no coolant in it, its stretching it.
