I was going thru the same awhile back. even took a few theromstats and boil tested them for when they closed. Mine ended up being a clogged up OEM Radiator, seems somewhere down the line of PO's someone had put in radiator sealer. I had chunks in my overflow bottle, and when I was taking out the old Radiator it wouldn't flow worth a damn. So I upgraded radiator to a 3 core and stays nice and cool.

That was my guess....when adding coolant it wouldn't take much at a time & it would bubble up every time I added... with engine off & cold

what finally got me narrowing it down to the Rad, was when i opened the drain plug and it wouldn't drain. And the chunks in the overflow bottle didn't help much either. All that was after I found a crack in the block and redone a motor for black beauty.

And yes XJ's are like Jeep Crack.
