I went under the hood. The first thing I did was to make sure water was in rad,it is a nasty rust color. Checked overflow and same rusty stuff. Pulled rad cap and rusty gook was clunked up on cap. Checked to see if heat was working and it was , so I know it's not the thermostat <thanks youtube>. Based on my very limited mechanical knowledge, the rad needs to be flushed and thanks to a friend it can be done on tomorrow and I can pay her later.
My question for those with more experience, can I drive short distances until I get this done. No more than about 6 miles round trip.

Mine is the same way Mava.
Guaranteed here is what happened:
The PO...when they started having overheat troubles, put in some stop leak products and whatnot to get the overheating to stop, cause they knew no better. The overheating being caused by the head gasket (or causing the head gasket). The stop leak stuff will make your coolant look like crap, and is actually, to me, detrimental to a cooling system.
Mine looks just like you describe...I have a new radiator and had to replace my t-stat, so I am SURE the PO of mine did the same.
I am flushing mine this evening.
Good luck!

Its amazing what a good flush will do. I have had great success with this kit at walmart. Well worth the $8 it cost

all you will need it coolant to fill it up once you are done flushing it, a screwdriver to looses/tighten the hose clamps and a water hose

Doesn't that kit also require you to cut one of the heater core hoses to put in the t-fitting? *that kit shows as $3.44 for me*
