Default Advice...

Anyone on here in MD have experience replacing engines or know anyone or reputable shop that has done this type of work on XJs? 99.99% sure I need to replace my motor. I have a 2000 XJ classic, just under 90k miles. Looks like previous owner didn't really take care of it to well. Oil pressure drops to zero at idle. I was told barrings are worn.

Not the sending unit or gauge and also had a new oil pump put on. The new pump helped for a while but, pressure is now back to zero at idle again. I even had the shop put on a new pump with the same result. That said, I need some help!!! Would love to take this task on myself, but I know my mechanic skill level and knowledge are not quite there yet.

I was leaning towards purchasing a Jasper, but its really expensive for shop to install ($4,800 from multiple shops) and I want to continue to stay married. Lol. I plan on holding on to my XJ forever so appreciate any advice? I'm not against purchasing used, but just don't want to run into the same problem.

Thanks in advance...

most likely you don't need a replacement, you just need to replace the crank bearings, which is as simple as dropping the oil pan and sliding the old ones out and the new ones in. Most shops can do this but try and find one that rebuilds engines regularly.

Now the cause of this on such a low mileage engine should be a concern. Your year cherokee had issues with the head cracking and allowing coolant into the oil. Do you see any evidence of this happening? You need to pull the dipstick and see if the oil is milky/frothy. Also remove the oil filler cap and look for deposits between cylinders 3 and 4.

I have been looking for side work so if you can't find anyone I can do it. You get the motor or parts you want and I can take care of it for $55 an hour. Goes for any one. I have built a few engines including a '03 bmw 745i. Pm me. I wont have really fast turn around for engine replacement but it will get done as fast a possible. Considering my crazy schedule.

Also, I'm looking for some stock leaf springs in good condition (intact spring eyes, minimal sagging) for my bastard pack build. Bushings don't matter - i have new ones. PM me if you have some to get rid of

controls the upshifts. In "3" it won't go into overdrive (good for towing). In "1-2" it won't go above 2nd gear (good for off-road or slow pulling - hardly ever used).

so..you don't really need to get out of drive.

oh hey, check out the leaf packs on the XJs you see for me tomorrow would you? I need ones that have positive arch (think smile) in them still, and that don't look too bad condition wise. If you find some good ones let me know.

np. ill be home prolly by 10A unless i found some massive, must have item that takes hours to remove, so check back around 10:30-11A for a PM.

btw, know anything about vibration-while-accelerating issues? it happens the worst after the kickdown at 35-40 MPH, so im thinking about 3rd gear? its killing her power and is annoyingly noisy and unpleasant.
