I am going to be honest with you Aaron, and you won't like it.
I side with your dad on this one. Think of it from his point of view. You are 17....you probably have just over a year of driving experience. Driving a mildly lifted jeep is one thing....driving a heavily lifted Jeep is another all together. There is a lot to consider once you get to 5+ inches and they can sometimes be hairy to drive. They do not handle like a car, and can be very dangerous if you have an error of judgement.
My last built Jeep was on 7" and 35's....and I only drove it to events and around the neighborhood. Even though it was not a DD, I did have to drive, sometimes a couple hours or more, to go wheeling. Many a time, that thing scared the crap out of me. You can build the hell out of it....but with that much suspension and MT tires, it just does not handle the same, or stop as well on the street.
This is not a knock on you...but I got to thinking, and I don't think I would let my 17 year old (probably on my insurance) drive a Jeep with a 5 inch lift with limited driving experience.
Sometimes you have to step outside of yourself and think from the other point of view. I imagine he would worry too much, and he does not think it is a good idea because he cares for you.
