Pros: Very common in wrecking yards, heavy-duty axle tubes, can be easily converted to 5-on-5.5 or even 8-on-6.5 lug pattern, cheap, good match for Isuzu rear axle
Cons: Avoid vacuum disconnect versions, six-lug pattern, spring-under housing, need to locate and weld on link brackets for XJ applications
Identified By: Stop sign like diff cover, spring-under housing, 60 inches wide
I've changed my plans a couple times now. Currently i'm thinking on a HP D44 from a F100/150 or f250, cut down the DS tube to fit a waggy DS shaft. Gives bigger tubes, reverse cut gears, more clearance to pinion

On the topic of axles, can a factory D30 be made reliable with a locker and 35s? If so, what would need to be upgraded?

sure as long as you're not hammering it. D30s can take a lot.

chromolly shafts and bigger u-joints are a must

The D30 under that big parts jeep I bought is pretty well built. A small truss, cromo shafts, LCA skids ARB locker and 4.88's in it. They guy wheeled this thing pretty hard on 35's and it's held up

Better safe than sorry, if you've got it out and are building it why not if you've got the time $ and skill?

I ran 34's with a lunchbox locker....NEVER broke anything in my 30 and it had no other mods.

Wheeling is not all about the skinny pedal...pick your lines...if you get stuck, pick another one.. Try to hammer through, things break.

I understand that, but if I'm running 35s, I wanna build for 37s.

yea the weak point in that build is going to be the small *** pinion gear with those 4.88s. I'd never recommend anything over 4.56s in a D30 - **** gets too small.
