Exactly, it's personal preference. When it comes to choosing between a Mossberg and a Remington it usually comes down to the safety placement and the location of the slide release. Most people prefer one way or the other. Here is a good link showing the differences. I prefer the 870 myself since that is what I grew up shooting but I like the slide release and reloading process better on the 500.

I have a Mossberg 9200, and I've never fired any shotguns, sad to say. However, you can't go wrong with a USP. I got the .45 Elite competition pistol, and it's by far my favorite gun I've ever fired. I haven't shot since I moved here, though, so if we can set up a day, I'd be happy to let you try it out.
