Anyone know how to determine if a pinion bearing needs replaced? Ive got a grinding noise coming from my front diff under deceleration.

Pulled front DS to rule out driveshaft. Hubs and ujoints look good. Vibes start at 55mph and stop at 10mph. Sounds like I'm driving with mud terrains and its getting louder every time I drive it.

I'm putting it on a lift at Fort Meade tomorrow to check it out and would like to figure out how to troubleshoot it.

If its the inner/outer pinion bearing does anyone have experience replacing bearing and setting up gears in a HP 30 off a 99?

That does sound like the bearing/s are going. I've had a shop do all my gearing and from the research I've done it's not something you want to try without knowing what you are doing. Unless something has changed I don't think there is anyone on the MD thread that does gears. I know Oliver is looking at starting to do them but don't think he is up and running yet.

LOL...piñon

Replacing that bearing requires you to pull the cover, shafts, spiders, carrier, and pinion. The bearings are pressed onto the pinion itself. Crush washer will need to be replaced as well.

They shouldn't need to fully re-"set up" the gears per say, just re-crush the new crush washer until the proper rotational torque is achieved. Regardless though it needs to be done by a shop that knows how to set up gears.
