The oil pressure was fine. I finally have a solid diagnosis, the engine is gone. I really want to keep my Jeep, but I survive off of monthly disability and the cheapest price I've got so far is $1600 (1200 engine,400 labor). I paid $3200 for it in October, so I am really bummed out about this entire situation. I was driving a Ford with 72,000 miles I had 3 payments remaining and while parked it was totaled. I only had a month to get a vehicle and I always wanted a jeep. My son and I looked at quite a few and this one was by far the best choice, so we thought.
The guy that looked at the jeep is a mechanic at US Naval Academy and checked it out as a favor for a friend. He asked what I would be willing to sell it for without the engine. The jeep is clean, new tires, no rust,141,000 miles. I don't know what to do. You all have been so very helpful too me,if it were what would you do in this same situation.

To give up on the engine this early in it's life would be foolish IMO. This problem is well documented in 2000-01 cherokees, and a relatively easy fix for many more trouble free miles. Mine has 252,000 miles on it, and still runs great - i've seen some over 400k as well.
what did he do to diagnose it? Compression/Leakdown test? Could just be a blown head gasket, not a cracked head.
anyone feeling an engine rebuild party? lol

Honestly these are incredibly easy engines to work on, parts are plentiful in junkyards, and bearings are cheap. There's no reason why it can't be fixed cheaply. The top end (head, valves, rods, etc) can be grabbed for <$100 from local junkyards - there is literally hundreds of cherokees in junkyards in this area. The fact that you have good oil pressure, and have not overheated the engine still makes me wonder if the bottom end is fine, but I would still advise replacing the crank bearings, which is a 2-3 hour job (engine can stay in the truck), and again, parts cost <$100, and that's being generous.

I don't know how many will be useable cause I have a 4 cyl and it's an 84 but I have a complete set of extra gaskets on the back of my jeep if needed.
