Do you think the whole side needs to be done or just throw in a patch?

My rear main seal is leaking fairly good. I was told that I shouldn't replace it because my crank has too much thrust to repair. I'm not sure what that means or if it's true. I've also read something about the bearings being worn out. I need to stop the leak if it can be fixed. Opinions/advice?

How many miles on the engine? It's not a hard job.

2 things would dictate my choice, where it is parked, and how much oil loss/consumption tween changes?

It's not parked anywhere that I have to worry about the mess. It's losing about a quart every 4 weeks or so. It needed 3 quarts of oil before my oil change which I do every 4500 miles.

I can't see where there would be an issue with your mileage. if it is truly, (dye test?) comin from the rear main, a proper replacement should be fine, all tree of mine, (knock on wood/tree) are holding up well, the 96 is in yer neck-o-the woods with mileage-
