Maryland Cherokee Club
Intro
Hi all. My name is Gretchen. I drive a 2001 Jeep Cherokee and I love this vehicle!!! Last week, it started having a misfire in one of the cylinders so I wanted to join the forum to see if anyone had any suggestions. If it's going to be an expensive fix, I might end up having to sell it to someone who has the expertise to fix it and enjoy it for the fantastic Jeep it is!
Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sweetness. My IRO double shear track bar and LCAs will be here tomorrow.
Also. Taking the Jeep to my uncles shop to finally have my O2 sensor fixed and probably have my brake master cylinder replaced as well.
Also i'm pretty sure the noise is a broken axleshaft on the driver side. Is the easiest way to check simply taking it out and looking?

ordered a new O2 sensor. so hopefully this weekend my CEL will be gone, and not just the bulb burnt out. May swap my front axle this weekend as well. which would include putting the track bar and LCAs on as well.
Just ordered the rest of the parts needed for my 8.8 swap. besides brakes anyway. Still want to get new rotors and pads, and remanned calipers.

Post the exact diagnostic code (Pxxxx) you are experiencing. Any unexplained loss in coolant? Does the misfire noticeably affect the engine operation or is the check engine light flashing?
Your year uses coil packs instead of a ignition coil / distributor system. It's possible one of the coil packs went bad.
Welcome Gretchen!

Thanks for responding! I called the mechanic to get the code and I am waiting for a call back. When I bring the Jeep in for an oil change they always top off the coolant, but it isn't something that I need to add to often.
The problem started when I was sitting at an idle and all of a sudden I heard a change in the idle noise and a slight knocking sound started. The engine light started flashing. At low gear, there is a loss in engine power. It takes a bit more to get the Jeep up to speed. Since I only drove it a few miles after the problem started, I can't say for sure that there is not issue once it starts picking up speed and shifting into higher gears. Thoughts?

I'd look into a coil pack going bad and needing to be replaced. I'd also change the plugs. The code should say what cylinder(s) the misfire is occurring on. There are 3 coils, one for every 2 cylinders, so if the misfire is on adjacent cylinders with the same coil pack, the pack is almost certainly bad.
I'd also look into your grounds. The coils use the ground point on the block by the oil dipstick. Make sure the ground wires are intact (both from the ground block to the coils and the battery (-), and shiny clean at the attachment points.

Anyone have a 3.07 geared XJ dana 30 in stock form lying around? suitable to run under my jeep temporarily without modification (ie. gears, carrier/pinion bearings, and ball joints in good shape). Doesn't need to have shafts, hubs, or brakes. Cheaper the better
