you wont get sick from anything out of the river...pcb's/mercury are really the only things you would worry about ingesting and there arent enough in the Susquehanna to bioaccumulate into larger predatory fish (the susquehanna suffers mostly from excessive nutrients, and most harmful chemical contamination has been taken care of...PA DEP and the EPA do a pretty bang up job of keeping up with pollutants entering the river...world class for sure!)
Granted, ive harvested many a fish with nasty open sores that look like herpes...but im not sure that it would bad to your health to eat those fish, just think of a cut that gets infected and doesnt heal right!
Also, if people are that worried about any contaminants/toxins in fish, just dont eat the fat! Most bad things just accumulate there...but not in noticeable amounts in the river...
Waterfowl are more likely to have harmful diseases/toxins when eaten, but you dont hear about it so people dont seem to care. Had a friend almost die from some kind of parasite that was in a duck and could survive the high temps of cooking, they get parasites because they often eat undigested grain in fertilizer and dabble in stagnant lake water...
Lakes are the real culprits considering toxic critters, but thats for another day

The officials who release info to the public on these things often times have the WORST data to back up their claims and are motivated by money...putting the river on an impaired watershed list has nothing to do with the state of the river, but rather lining the pockets of higher ups in state and NPO's. More regulation=more wealth for them. Grass root efforts and educating kids are the best things to do, and also involving people who actually UNDERSTAND ECOLOGY and dont sit at a ****ing desk all day...

Did you guys see the news report on TV?
It has people from Harrisburg catching fish with those sores all over them.
They said they would not eat anything out of the river, why would I?

That's because someone up stream is dumping something and it's affecting everything, and someone's covering it up, I heard there's no fish really at all below Harrisburg
