If you are over 6'3" pass the seats kill your back after like an hour of driving.

I'm a big fan of used BMW's. We got a 2005 325xi with all wheel drive for $5500, the interior and build quality is a million times nicer than Jap cars and they handle better and are quieter on the highway. And don't believe the rumors that maintenance is more expensive on them. They are easier to work on and parts are similarly priced to any other car if you work on them yourself.

Not at all, my brother has had a couple and we have this one. None of them have ever given us any problems. Simple maintenance stuff like oil changes are easier in my opinion, the filter is designed so it doesn't dump oil all over the place like other cars. Brakes are brakes, not a big deal to change them. Sure, if you have major engine or trans issues it will cost more, but if you maintain them well BMW engines and transmissions don't break. I will say the newer 06ish+ ones have some electrical gremlins due to being more computerized, but the 98-06 3 series is one of the most reliable cars you can buy, and you can find them for less than Hondas and Toyotas of a similar age.

you realize I'm a European auto specialist right? haha. I fix these things for a living. BMW's are generally bought new by people with a lot of money, no automotive knowledge, and no cares. they mostly get traded in/sold around 80-120k miles because that's when the problems tend to start. they are nice running/driving cars, and will last a long time, but like every other car require the maintenance to be kept up in in order to last that long. parts are more expensive for them then jap /American cars. they tend to not like the "generic aftermarket" parts that you would buy from advance/auto zone. however you can get lucky and get a good one that was will taken care of, but it's just like any other car.... luck of the draw.

Just going from my personal experience, we've never had any big issues with any of our German cars, and my family has had A LOT of them. I have had a fair share of problems with American cars and they are often a pain in the *** to work on. Ford will design a car as cheap as they can and not care about who has to work on it down the road. Euro cars seem to be designed with maintenance in mind to keep it simple, ie pretty much every Euro car uses the same size oil drain plug, its a gamble with a ford. My brother was a Ford dealer tech and is now a Volvo tech and likes working on the Volvos so much more.
