I did this to mine, sadly it recently quit working again though.

Didn't we just have this conversation a few weeks ago on here? The factory switches go bad from heat and corrosion. Tear it apart, clean it up, hit it with some dielectric grease, viola. If it doesn't work after that, then bust out your multimeter and prepare to have some fun.
I did this to mine, sadly it recently quit working again though.
Check for voltage at lights first, if you have voltage then most likely it's your bulbs or wiring is corroded inside the housing. If not voltage, go to switch and check if you're getting supply voltage first, if yes, see if any is coming out when you go the switch on, if no, suspect bad switch. If you're not getting supply power to the switch, suspect fuse or wiring.
