Hey guys. Starting this thread to kind of keep track of my progress, as well as maybe get some good feedback. Started tearing into the 91 XJ today, it’s been a great start so far. Lots of extremely rusted bolts, broken radiator neck, and a lot of spiders… this Jeep has been sitting for several years, previous owner said that he had thought the timing chain slipped some teeth, pulled the cover off today, and found pieces from the hole in the timing cover broken off and bound up in the chain. Pulled the chain off cleaned out the metal scraps, and reinstalled timing chain. Tried to turn the crank by hand…. No luck. Hooked up to power, bumped starter a few times to check for timing mark alignment. Crank moved but still couldn’t turn by hand. Pulled spark plugs. Cranked starter for 5 seconds, had good rotation, still couldn’t turn by hand. Starting to get pretty concerned at this point. Twisted plugs back in a few turns just to kinda wrap things up for the day and somewhat seal things up from the elements, went back to make sure timing sprocket was tight… before covering that back up, and the crank was turning!! Was able to get several full rotations by hand at this point slowly, was getting some compression as the plugs were not tightened down completely. Still a bit concerned I’ve got some potentially serious work ahead of me, oil also smells heavily of fuel. Will also be checking for leaky injectors tomorrow. Had multiple black spark plug ends. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
ordering new radiator, water pump, thermostat and housing, timing chain set, timing cover, and gasket.
Quick update, motor had a blown head gasket, and had been sitting like that for a couple years. Ordered a remanufactured 7120 head, and will be rebuilding the bottom end. Anyone know of any rebuild kits to stay away?
I restored a 91 xj that belonged to my son. Left under a tree for a couple of years. Completely tore it apart inside and out and went down a rabbit hole of projects and parts for a year. Archived a lot of places for parts and manuals if you need anything. Even found a ac evap core with the hole for the temp sensor which is rare.

Definitly turned into somewhat of a rabbit hole. Bought it in hopes it was going to be a a small amount of work to get it going, a month later the motor is pulled and getting prepped for the machine shop. Figured while I’m at it I’d replace the entire a/c system, cooling system, sensors, etc.. pretty sure this thread is going to turn into more of just a repair thread for now once I’m done throwing money at gettin er runnin.

you put some nice work into it ! great build keep it up
Thanks I appreciate that. Trying to build her to last, got the crank in this last weekend, piston ring 2 was a bit tight for my liking so waiting on a piston ring grinder to come in Monday to open them up a hair.
