MAKING A HEADLINER BOARD FOR MY 1985 JEEP CHEROKEE

After my headliner board fell apart when I took it out to redo it, I researched a lot to find out to make a new one, but had no luck. So after seeing some youtube videos on other projects this is how I made mine.

Videos I watched:

materials needed:

Home depot

Store SKU #409692

FOAMULAR 1/4 in. x 4 ft. x 50 ft. R-1 Fanfold Underlayment Rigid Foam Board Insulation Sheathing

$49.83 (I got it ½ off due to some of it being damaged)

Store SKU #626633

PPG GRIPPER

1 gal. White Interior/Exterior Acrylic Primer Sealer

$25.98/gallon

Store SO SKU #1002244229

Gorilla Glue

4 fl. oz. Original Glue

$6.47

Store SKU #517898

$21.98/roll

Phifer

48 in. x 25 ft. BetterVue Screen

WALMART

Walmart # 448074

Reynolds Kitchens Plastic Coated Freezer Paper, 150 Square Feet

$7.32

General Purpose Duct

Around $5.00

DAY ONE

1- Measure old headliner board

2- unfold Insulation and cut two with your length measurement

3 - find center in one - using your width measurement - cut down the center.

4 - using your insulation width measurement and width of headliner board calculate how much your still need.

5 - using your second piece of Insulation cut the calculated strip to make up the correct width that you need. (Add three inches to the filler strip you just cut) and cut a supporting strip.

6 - On a flat surface place freezer paper (Plastic Coated side up) located for the center of insulation will be.

7 - lay out your insulation with your two halfs with small filler in center.

8 - have duct tape and something for weight (I used a wide board with weights on top)

9 - Duct tape larger pieces to each side of small filler.

10 - flip over (were duct tape is now on freezer paper)

11 - Using the Gorilla Glue and small brush to apply a thin layer (moving quickly) to small center and edges of larger ones covering the width of the supporting strip you cut. Cover your supporting strip with glue. (let it get tacky) and attach supporting strip. cover with freezer paper (plastic coating side down) cover with board and weigh it down. Let dry following directions on bottle.

**** THE FREEZER PAPER AND DUCT TAPE KEEP THE GLUE FROM EXPANDING ON THAT SIDE. (THIS SMOOTH SIDE WILL BE YOUR GOOD SIDE YOU CAN COVER.

DAY TWO

1 - on the same side that you added the center supporting strip add wide supporting strips along all of the thin folds. Glue the fold areas and the supporting strips. Let glue get tacky then attach tape into place. Cover with freezer paper and weigh down. Let dry as directed. After drying completely remove support strips and add a good layer of glue and let air dry(it will expand and support these areas.

DAY THREE

1 - Remove duct tape (carefully). Paint good side with gripper paint Let dry.

2 -At this point I put headliner board back into the Jeep. (I had all the seats taken out)

I applied two coats on letting it dry between coats. Add extra layers to folds to even area.

3 - after 4-8 hours after last coating of gripper primer I was able to take it back out and was starting to get my shape. I put the headliner board on some old folded foam I had around to not flatten out the shape I had. Paint a layer of gripper paint to back. Loosely tape freezer paper on top (Plastic Coated side down) and place back in jeep.

DAY FOUR

1 - Remove headliner board add second coat to the back and add screen in manageable sizes. Add another layer of gripper paint. Cover loosely and put it back in the jeep.

DAY FIVE

At this point your board now has its shape.

And is ready to cover or do what I did and sand it and paint it. I did the paper bag method that was done in video.

I know this seems like it goes on forever to make. But it is cost efficient, and although its 4 days it’s not like its all day for 4 days.

There was trial and error for me to get it. But I am happy with mine

**** NOTE… Out of the different ways I tried to get a great cut, using my 60mm rotary fabric cutter with lock and a metal ruler.

**** OLFA Deluxe Rotary Cutter 60mm ****

HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE.... GOOD LUCK
