Well fellas, she's gone. Handed the keys over to its new owner last night. A bit bittersweet but of course, the winch decided to **** the bed right when I got there... it's always something.
Before I sold it, I did replace the oil pressure sending unit as my gauge was starting to steadily spike under regular load. It would creep up to 80 but before it ever did, I would shift and cruise only for it to do the same thing. Engine sounded fine though, so it seemed like the sending unit was bad. After replacing it, the same issue was there. So, I changed the oil AGAIN and used an K&N oil filter (read: expensive) and gave it a little "Italian Tune-Up" and it's fine. Made the trip down from NY to TN with zero issues and even got 360 miles to a tank.
New owner is a good friend of mine and the president of the off-road club I was in while in TN. He has a Chili Pepper TJ on 33s. The rig is in good hands.
Now, I'm passively looking for a 4.0/NP242 ZJ or WJ to replace my Outback as a DD. No more trail rigs for me for a while. NY sucks for that. I'll look to replace the XJ with a autox/rallyx/track car - either Miata or 2.5rs.

Thanks man - I dig the AR23s, however, I do think I'd like to go back to a factory wheel.
So, yes. I did buy the old girl back. My friend Joe, my old off-road club's president, had it for a little more than a year and put about $800 in mods and maintenance into it. He also used it as his daily driver. I sold it to him with about 173k miles and it now has 188k. Still runs fantastic though!
Going off memory, here's what he did:
-New alternator
-New waterpump, thermostat, radiator hoses and radiator.
-Rugged ridge floor mats
-Cobra CB and antenna
-All-new stereo - Pioneer head unit, amp, speakers and some 12" (I think) subwoofer (I plan to ditch it as it takes up too much space)
-Fender flares
-Touched up paint on the bumpers and sliders
-New battery and much better wiring.
-Fixed turn signals (the relay I thought was good was bad)
-Open rear diff
So, she's an open/open truck on Ko2s (mall crawler) but runs and drives like a champ. I came home to Knoxville for a wedding and this just kind of happened. He wanted the money, I wanted a rig again. Looking back at this whole thread, I forgot how many adventures I had with this truck. It was a huge learning experience for me. I made a bunch of amateur mistakes along the way, but I think I'm a better shadetree mechanic because of it.
I plan to take this thing back to Rochester and start to resto-mod it into a long-distance trail rig. I like the skinny 33s and 4.11 set up, so I'd like to keep that. I'd like to either ditch the 27 spline 8.25 or convert it to a 29 spline so I have better access to lockers. The D30 is good, but needs a slight rebuild now - likely new unit bearings, u-joints and ball joints. I'd also like to sound deaden the interior and put a headliner back in. Western NY wheeling sucks, so this thing is going to be driven to Vermont, New Hampshire, PA, and Maine where wheeling actually exists.
I think down the road, I'd love to 3-link the front, put 35s on with only 4" of lift and swap in a R28 diesel. That's way down the road though. Now, I'm just happy I have a rig again.
Wish me luck fellas - I gotta drive this thing to NC on Friday and then back up to Rochester.

Pulled her out of the garage and took her for a quick spin - mostly as motivation. This thing needs SO MUCH work but I love it. It's so loud with the tire roar, no headliner and no hatch panels. Plus, the axles are getting loud again. It also is losing brake pressure but isn't leaking fluid. Did I mention it leaks engine oil and transfer case fluid... and diff oil.
I really want an ARB bull bar and winch again. Now that the winch is off, that Bleepin Jeep front bumper looks so damn ugly, it's honestly embarrassing.
Plus, I hate the Ko2s. They're not even close to 33s, so my plan is to run 265/75r16 MTZs. That should keep the 4.11s happy and the stock sheet metal.
One more day of maintenance and my two commuter cars will be ready for winter (my 2dr XJ and Outback). It's about time this one goes under the knife. I really want it to be a 2019 adventure machine.
