Renix TBI fuel injection. Check ground to engine. Check positive feed to injector (same as FP), should have constant +12v when ignition is on. The injector opening is triggered by the ECU through the ground wire. (connector wire 21)

Engine: 2.5 liter 4cyl
Been there done that
I just got done with that same rebuild about 3 monthe ago, mine is a 87 2.5 4 cyl.
Mine came out good but then again I used to rebuild engines for a living so this was just another rebuild, but what I did learn was that these little engines have some unique things about them.
1. Make sure you prime the engine with oil before you crank it or start it.
by filling engine with oil then put a oil pressure gauge on the oil sender port. Put an oil filter on it and spin the oil pump with an old screw driver bit chucked in a drill, clockwise rotation. Important: "do not use an impact gun to spin the oil pump it will ruin the gears in the oil pump". Check the gauge for oil pressure. Should be a least 25 with a new oil pump and crank kit,"ground crank and new bearings."
2.Your no start maybe a fuel pressure problem, check to see if you have pressure at the throttle body, it sounds like your fuel pressure regulator might not be letting fuel into the injector.
Fuel pressure regulator valve is just a rubber diaphragm built into the throttle body.
3. Did you replace the timing chain tensioner and if not I hope you inspected it real good, the are know to wear out.
Spray some gas in the throttle body to see if it runs. also check your fuse for the fuel pump.
When you turn your key on before you try and start it do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds and then shut off, if not your fuel pump may not be working. It may be an electrical problem or the pump just stopped working.
I hope this helped a little, I am here if your need any help, good luck.

Sorry for all that uneeded infor on you first post, did bother reading your second post, good you got it running.
I have almost the same cherokee, a 1987 2.5 liter fuel injection with a 5 speed manual.
I just put a 3" Rough Country lift on it this last weekend, along with the 9.5 x 30 x 15 bfg all terrain it looks good, cant wait to get it back from my daughter who I loaned it to.
Later Steve j.

some more progress on the heep, i took the chrome off to find at least 1/4 inch of bondo under there.. that was a project to get all the sticky adhesive off of there. while my mom was mad cause the air drill was loud. but i got that done and painted from the lower body line down black, eventually i want to bed line it. but thats it for now. next is trying to figure out why my windshield wipers wont work, any suggestions?
