Well bad news and relatively good news.
I noticed some of my side cladding was loose, and I was already missing some, so I pulled it off.
On the bright side, I pulled off the rest after seeing that, and that was the only rust.
Now I'm going back to my idea of trimming the lower 1/4 off the bedsides to eliminate that damage and rust, and to give myself more clearance in the rear. The more I take her off road, the more the final image in my head changes from Armored Princess to Trail Wench.
