Awesome photo and looks like you guys are in the jungle!!! Those doorless mods man always make me wonder how weak it might make the XJ after you do that.

Welp, here 'goes... Project slow n' steady...-photo489.jpg
Here's a jeep my friend was in Friday night that rolled with the doors off. Everyone made it out fine even though it didn't have doors on and one guy didn't have his seat belt on. Looks to me like the rear doors did a little bit to help hold the roof up.

Too close for comfort there and just makes me not want to do that. I can see taking the doors off and drive it around a little if you like but off roading and the potential of that happening, no thanks! At least no one got hurt.

That wasn't "offroad" he was on gravel roads drifting it then it caught traction and rolled from what I was told. In the pictures I've seen of it the sway bar was disconnected which doesn't help anything either.

Gotcha wasn't clear on what they were doing prior to this incident.

I've seen just as much damage from rollovers with the doors on.

If you're really that concerned about it, the only answer is roll cage.

As far as the two Jeeps in that pic with the doors off, both have interior cages. I myself have run with the doors off offroad, on road, on the highway, flexed out on ramps and obstacles on the trail.... the doors still open and close just as good as they did before I ever took them off.

I'm leery of a rollover being as I don't have a cage..... but doors on or off won't much difference without one.

All that being said, the argument about doors is just as old and tired as the argument about swaybars, what lift can fit what tires, and if diesel oil is the best oil for your motor. There's all kinds of opinions and no hard evidence to nail down one solid "yay" or "nay".

Bottom line is just to always be careful when you're out on the trails. Hope that's kind of an unspoken rule.

Well said my friend! I honestly had no idea and I want a cage for the simple fact of safety but really becuase I think they are just down right ****ing awesome looking!!!! Diesel oil in your XJ? Never heard that one before and if so maybe I should try it since I have a Diesel pickup now and plenty of that to go around lol.

lol... well if you're down for some hilarity, head on over to the Rotella thread and get yourself thoroughly confused. My overall take on the subj is, it wouldn't be a bad move for someone like you who has a ton of it on hand. It's good oil, it cleans the internals real well, and has lots of additives to reduce wear. That being said, it can kill the catalytic converter quicker than running CMO, so just be aware of that.

For someone like me that goes out and buys oil everytime it's due for an oil change, it's not really worth the extra money. Pennzoil yellow bottle is all that's been in my XJ since I've owned it, and it's great oil that works well. My catatlytic is punched out, so I don't have to worry about killing it... maybe one day I'll run across a good deal on a 5 gallon bucket of Rotella and give it a shot. Who knows.

The rotella is not really all that bad in price just when you have to buy nearly 4 gallons of it for a Diesel pickup is when it gets expensive. Good thing I run full synthetic so I can push my miles out a bit. Wait too long and my injectors don't like it. I tend to stock up on it as time goes on each pay check just to have it so it does not break the bank by the time I need to do oil change. My truck costs me $80 for oil change each time I do it. Between 4 gallons of oil and then filter another $20. I only really need 3.5 gallons so I always end up with extra.

Gallon of full syntheic Oil runs you about $22 or so Walmart and then your $5 filter for the XJ is not really setting you back but when you say it hurts the Cat I can understand some folks not doing it. My '89 would be fine since it is beyond inspection here in Washington.

Yeah, I'm still running conventional in mine. I run full synth Mobile 1 in my chrysler, but just never have had the desire to run anything but Yellow Penn in my Jeep's motor. Honestly, I'd kinda rather change that oil a little more frequently anyway.

Off topic but figured I ask anyhow, what is the best plugs, wires and cap and rotor to do on tune up for these XJ's? I'm going to do a tune up on my Green XJ and wanted to get a good setup. I don't remember what I put in my Red one.

Cheap ole copper plugs. Either Champion, NGK, Autolite, or Motorcraft. I've had the best luck with NGK myself.

As far as wires go, you don't really have to do anything fancy. Just get a quality set of 7mm wires. AC Delco is decent. I'm running 8mm Accel wires, but that's because I'm running a pretty hot Accel ignition coil that likes to throw sparks through the walls of the wire insulation against metal objects nearby if I use the OE spec wires.

Cap and rotor I got from D.U.I. and love 'em. Brass terminals and made in 'Merica. Good quality product.

Always keep in mind.... when AMC designed these motors, they did it right. No need to go messing with crazy upgrades of stuff. OE spec works best and keeps these things happy. My Jeep doesn't run any better with the hot coil and thicker wires than it did before I put it in there. Just didn't want to spend the extra money to buy a new OE coil when I discovered there was no difference lol.
