01 grand cherokee have a chiped key ?

Yes it does. It's covered with plastic, right? What color is the plastic? Black would be an aftermarket key, grey would be an original key. One of the dash lights looks like a key with a circle and slashmark thru it, right? That's the SKIM light and if it goes out after you start it, it has recognized the key as being valid. If it doesn't go out and the engine quits, that means it doesn't.

Yes, it uses the Sentry-Key immobilizer system, You'll need to get a key programmed by a dealer or skilled locksmith that deals with chipped keys. There's some process out there where you can program a new key yourself if you have at least 2 original keys, but if you only have one key, you can't do it yourself.
