Is it full? Check hot idling in Neutral after cycling thru the gears. Filter plugged? Linkage connected? Wrong fluid?

Yes, the OP already said he topped off w/ Dexron / Mercon instead of ATF+4.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'm done with it i gave in and took it to a shop. I am not a transmission guy and don't know much about them. Plus this is also my daily/play toy so I can't be working on it for ever I already put more money and time into than I wanted. Again appreciate all the help any way.

Is it a miss print saying you have a 42 RE? In a 1993 Jeep I don't think they offered the RE yet, I could be wrong, I know for sure the 46 RH was used in 93 and the 46 RE came out in 1996? I know the 46 RE was only in a jeep in 98, but I'm just pointing out the RE's were later. Is that a tranny you put in or is it original? If that year isn't supposed to have an RE that could be a problem, the governor wouldn't work and it would probably slip the tranny and ruin the clutches or build up heat and break something else.

The 42RE was used in the 4.0L engine vehicles.

it is the 42re I have the 4.0 and it used to be awd but i swapped the transfer case out. the trans was burned up from driving it from san diego to nashville loaded down. I was hoping that wasn't the case but oh well **** happens. I was trying to rule out all the other possibilities before I got to that point.
