I tried the turn it on/ off three times and leave it on the fouth time - but All I got was the oddometer reading and no codes ...
I tried it several times - and nothing - so I guess it's back to the drawing board. any other suggestions would be appreciated - It was running great - and it won't turn over now - there appears to be 3/4 full of gas - although nothing is registering any fuel or the volts or actually anything - it says 'check gages" and also there is a key with a cross thhough it showing as well....????? grrrrr

Are you using one of the original keys that came with your Jeep or a duplicate key? If it's a duplicate that could explain your problem. Duplicate keys can be programmed by you if you have the originals, or by a dealer if you don't. Read this, it explains the SKIS system. http://www.wjjeeps.com/sentry.htm

Thanks Dan - I looked up the key with the slash and found out about the sentry key - I have two keys - one with the black alarm thingy - that I have always used and a second 'light grey" key - but now both show this slashed key - it comes on then goes off - then comes on continuosly - maybe I can take the keys and the little baggie they came in to the dealer to see if they are programed correctly - i tried the owner's maual suggestion of inserting the 'good' key in first to on position - then within 60 seconds to insert the 'other' key - but there is still the slashed key icon - stupid car - isn't there any way to turn this off???
Thanks - will check in later this afternoon - - i have a feeling that this is going to be an easy fix - i was hoping for a fuse....lol
thanks again

So,when you try to start the jeep now you get absolutely nothing,no crank,no gauges just your SKIS light and check gauges lights?

Default re: keys and the sentry key thingy

I called the dealership and the fellow there said that if my key fob opens and locks the doors - it is programed right - and OF COURSE- he has never heard of any jeep EVER doing what my jeep is doing - or rather not doing - and to have it towed in...
after doing some more research - it read somewhere if the battery goes dead sometimes it will freak out the computer -and it did go dead a week or so ago - but ran great after (for the entire week)i got a jump until I parked it where she lays today - and still will not turn over
i am ready to hit it with a hammer - so I will try and do some more research and stay away from the car for a while
thanks folks
Steff

Try this. Remove the bat cables and hold them together for 10 seconds. This will drain any residual power, and clear the memory from the PCM. After reconnecting the cables, use the original key not the copy, to start the Jeep. When it starts you'll have to take it for a good drive so it can relearn the parameters. I understand you might not trust it if it starts. But if it starts take it to the dealer to have the other key programmed. According to the SKIS link you need both original keys to program another key.
That's probably what happened when your bat died. You used the copied key and the system didn't recognize it, and disabled the system. JMO

Are you sure the battery is good? Thats the reason i was asking my previous question, sure sounds like the battery is dead,or has a bad connection. Since you say the battery has died before i would get it checked to make sure it's good. There could also be a slow drain thats killing the battery in a short amount of time.

If it was a SKIS related issue the jeep should still fire up and die after 2-3 seconds,in the case of NO crank what so ever,it usually turns out to be battery related.

Good luck

I get the slashed sentry key icon - and it does try and turn over - although does not get any fuel so it won't complete the turn over - it shows no reading on any of the gages - no fuel ,no voltmeter -

Default it all started this way about two weeks ago

I just moved down to mountians in Utah from the Oregon coast - this is a new car to me. when I got here - I was checking the battery , oil, radiator fluid etc and notcied the battery terminals had some corrosion on them. I poured a coke over the terminals to clean them up - which worked really well. In the unpacking of my car over the next few days - I left the back hatch up - and light on and drained the battery - I got a jump- and it was fine - I drove serveral trips - stop n go traffic and hiway miles- and she just hummed along beautifully. then last week - I drove a short distance to get gas and when I came home and parked it it seemed fine. the next morning I went down to start it and it would not turn over - my gas gage was below empty - which really got my goat as I had just put about 40 bucks worth of gas into the tank - I thought I had been robbed of my gas. I went and got a gallon or so of gas - and put it in the tank. and tried to start it. also I checked the visor panel and it said I still have 260 miles to go on this tank of gas - and my brother 'shook the car' and we could hear the gasoline -it would not turn all the way over - it is fuel starved- then I noticed that the voltmeter wasn't working either - and also the sentry key icon came on - I didn't even know I had a sentry key! I did know about not losing the key as they were very exspensive to replace - i thought it was something to do with the key fob - and I came here and have been trying all the suggestions I can - including turning the ignition on/off 3 times and leaving it on the 4th time to see the 'codes" - however all I see is the mileage - and not the codes or the 'done' that is supposed to show up.
I have tried to take the battery cables off and touch them together to eliminate the charge or drain it completely and had just came in now to see how long I am suppossed to leave them off for - as I tried it and still get the sentry key icon and it only seemd to change the time on the radio... maybe I need to leave it off the battery for a while longer???
I don't know it seems something would work - it was just fine - I just drove her from Oregon nearly to Wyoming - before that I drove her from Palm Springs to Oregon and it has always ran great... beats me - but I do surely appreciate your input - makes me a little less frustrated thanks alot!
