I know this is only part of the discussion here. But I can't tell any difference in either the gas I use or the oil. I have used WalMart and or ACE oil in most of my vehicles simply because it's cheaper than brand names. I change it religiously ever 3000 miles, often using a FRAM filter, largely because that was what was available. Keep in ind I spent the last 24 years living on Kauai , Hawaii. Not a lot of options available. I've used 10w30, 5w30 and even straight 30w. I have only had this WJ for a short time and changed the oil only once in it to establish a base line. The longest I have ever owned a vehicle was 16 years. It was a 52 Chevy Pick up, that didn't even have an oil filter. So, for what its' worth, that's my experience. Maybe this Jeep will be different.

I've used Valvoline oil and AC filters on every vehicle I've ever owned and have NEVER had an oil related problem, EXCEPT for the one that sheared the oil pump drive at 70 mph! That was a POS 61 Chevy 283 that was old, tired and full of sludge when I got it.

HOWEVER, since I bought this WJ 4.0 I've used 10W-30 Valvoline Synthetic and Mopar filters. I want it to last as long as possible.

I also haven't found any difference in fuel brands but it runs a lot better on ethanol-free gas. In my neck of the woods, that's 194 octane. On my last long trip, 5 hours round trip at 70 mph with all the windows down, I got 20.4 mpg. (4.0 with 177K miles on it, and the converter lock-up doesn't work.)

Oops. I stand corrected. For a while no alcohol fuel was available at one station near where I lived on Kauai. I will agree with you. My Chevy truck ran better on that. Got better mileage and it was much more expensive than gasahall. Brands and octane level though. No difference.

Yes, it's about fifty cents more a gallon than 87 octane here. I filled up yesterday on 87 and it was $2.499 here, the lowest it's been in quite a while.

Anyhow, getting back to the lifter tick. It's possible there is some wear in the bore that holds the hydraulic rocker mount causing some pressure to bypass the piston, even though it's new. After all. it IS aluminum. This is an "off-the-cuff" suggestion, but may have some merit. Did I tell you I HATE aluminum heads for a street car?
