2001 4.0l Axle issues and possible shop scam
Hi all,
My son has a 2001 grand failed inspection because of a rear leaking axle. A local shop had changed the seals and bearings already 2 times less than 1.5 years for the same axle. This was the third time in that time frame.
When they finished, they said that the axle was going bad and the wheel had a lateral give of about 1/4". I suggested they messed something up and had them fix it, citing that maybe they put on the wrong retaining ring size on.
They called me up and said they forgot to put the retaining ring on, and now it is fixed. We drove it home, and about 5 miles away, a large bang sound and a jolt in the rear. Pulled over and I drove it about 10 yards more hearing a scraping sound. They now say the differential is broken and are suggesting I pay to fix it. Thoughts?
