2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Knocking
I'm a newbie. Bought this brand new in 2002, 4.0 L V6 4x4 it has 208,000 miles on it and has ran extremely well for me. I've maintained it well. Not the usual tick, started knocking couple months ago. I had the oil changed and the knocking got worse, added oil treatment, same thing.
Last week, knocking has become embarrassing loud. It seems to be knocking on the upper part of the engine, can almost put your finger on it. Right side of the valve cover.
Took it in yesterday, checked on it today, mechanic came back with its a rod, need new used engine. Will call you tomorrow. Not sure how I feel about this..
what test could have told him this in such a short amount of time.
Am I being paranoid. I'm hesitant to just change out the engine.
I am going to get a 2nd opinion, but in the meantime does anyone have good advice on how to proceed.

Went and picked up the Jeep today. Mechanic still had valve cover off... which was cool. Looked over all the rockers and everything in the upper part of engine.. everything was solid. It actually looked good. The sound is coming from the front bottom part of engine.
Have to park her for a couple of months til I get funds to have a rebuild done. Thanks to all who responded.

Engine knocking
I have had same issue with my 2000 4.0 Grand Cherokee. Looked at forums, took head off to see if it was lifters. Took engine out, broke down and had 3 pistons with broken skirts. Quite amazewd that compression test was OK but sounded like hell in there.
Put new pistons in, busy rebuilding it now.
