Default 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 Radiator fan issues.

Hello guys, I just wanted to ask if anyone can help me out with my Jeep. It has an issue where the electric radiator fan will not work. Only thing keeping the car from overheating sometimes is the clutch fan on the water pump lol. The relay for the electric fan is brand new and the fan was working when we did a direct jump. The issue seems to be the connector that connects the electric fan to the relay right next to the radiator. I noticed that when the fan wasnt working, I touched the connector and the fan started to work for a while but it will stop after a couple of days or so. Does anyone know where I can get the connectors or a solution to this issue, i dont want to kill my jeep through overheating and also having the A/C not be as cold as it should. Thank you for any help!

I just used inline spade connectors, reversing one so to keep polarity when disconnecting it.

Hmm, those work better than the original connectors? And how would i go about putting them on? First time I hear that term. Thank you!

They are just crimp-on terminals you use pliers to set. I put one male end on one wire and a female on the other so you couldn't connect them wrong. You should use quality terminals because they have to carry about 30 amps or so. Use the good insulated ones so they won't short out if they hit something. I got mine at NAPA on the "Help" rack.

All right, another question. My Jeep has the mechanical fan also. Should the mechanical fan alone be able to prevent the car from starting to get hotter at idle? I dont know if my mechanical fan can also be having issues.

Do you know how to check the mechanical fan? There are several ways to check, and a few different things you can look at to help verify your mechanical fan is functioning properly.

Grab a fan blade with the engine cold and fling it hard. The fan should not rotate more than three complete rotations. Too much free-wheeling is usually a sign that the clutch is prone to slipping. On the other hand, too much resistance means the clutch is binding and can’t turn freely. In either case, it probably should be replaced. Idealy, the fan should not turn more than one full, to one and a-half full revolutions. Not more than three.

Start the engine from cold and watch the fan. Within 3 - 4 minutes it should be spinning. If it has not begun spinning by the time your engine is getting close to 200*F, it is safe to say the fan is bad.

You can also check that the fan speed slows down as you gradually push on the accelorator, bringing the speed up to past 2500 RPMs. You can perform this test while the vehicle is parked and in the neutral gear. It should slow down when reaching the higher RPMs.

If you have a mechanical fan clutch that is binding badly, it will roar at you once reaching highway speeds too.

Not all the Jeeps have one of these mechanical fans though. Reasoning says that since without having one of these mechanical fans, it is still designed not to overheat, so it really shouldn't be necessary to prevent overheating.

My XJ has both a clutchfan and an electric fan side by side. Normally the clutchfan handles all the cooling, but if I'm stopped in traffic or sitting idling, the electric will cycle to keep it cool.

Grab the mechanical clutch fan - a blade, and give it a hard fast flick to spin it when it is cold. Do the same when it is hot just after shutting the engine down to turn the Jeep off, since it would still be on and spinning if the engine is in operation.

Compare the different results you get for the hot and cold mechanical clutch fan grab & spin testing procedure, to see how many revolutions you can spin it when hot vs how many revolutions you get when the engine is cold.

Update: it's fixed turned out to be the fan itself, the mechanic tested it so I bought a fan off advanced and it always runs now so no need to splice.
