2003 has no reverse

2003 has no reverse
2003 Grand Cherokee is not going into reverse but will drive forward. Makes slight grinding sound like something missing/spinning.
I've heard this could simply be a dirty filter or a solenoid/sensor, and as bad as time to have tranny rebuilt.
