2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 Overheating

Old fart with a wrench
The only thing I can add is try replacing the relay. You could have one that's not working properly. The fan is a pretty heavy electrical load and may have burnt the contacts.

Hi! I have the same problem on a 2000 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0, fan docent come on "I think" when the car is running, I disconnected the sending unit with the car on and the fan comes on but I louse the temp gauge on the dash board and it comes on when the A/C is on, so my question is where is the second temp sensor if there one and the A/C fan relay.

Hey guys. I'm new.
2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo with the 4.0 is overheating at idle and in the first 2-3 minutes after idling. Once moving the coolant temp comes down.
Started doing this today. No recent work done to the car or the cooling system. This is the single electric fan set up, and the relays are in the relay box next to the battery. Not underneath the headlight.
I have already tried replacing both relays and it does not seem to make a difference. I can get the fan to come on by turning on the AC system. I cannot seem to get the fan to come on via temperature reading. I cannot and do not see any coolant leaking.
Has anyone else had this problem with this set up? If so what was it?
Thank you.

You mentioned you do not have any coolant leaks. Have you checked the fluid level? Have you consumed any?
I went through some rough **** with my C5 vette where I warped the heads. I was overheating and mysteriously losing coolant. No leaks.
Ultimately had coolant in my motor oil. Bad head gasket.

Hey the 9-5 Guy,
I feel you pain. I am having a similar issue. 2004 I-6. Single electric fan. Since we know this is a common problem on these it has been fixed before. The previous owner even told me he 'relocated the relay for easy access'. I should have known. Turns out through a lot of digging the '04 didn't have the old style relay and had two in the Fuse box. I look there to find a jumper running out of the old style relay and into the high speed relay spot. Pretty hacky. I decided to try to put it back to 'stock' but in doing so still cannot power up the fan.
I am wondering since mine is an early build '04 (3-'03) if it was different even though it has the two relays in the fuse box. For instance one of the wires that should lead from the High Speed relay to the ECM is not there.
What is the build date of your '04?
Did you ever resolve the issue? I need some help on this too!

2004 Laredo Over heating
I have the same problem on my 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo, 4.0L
Fan does not go on. It doesn't go on with the ac either. It has full coolant. Fan works because I pulled it out and tested it. Changed both relays in fuse box, and 40amp fuse. Change the sensor on the thermostat housing and it still wont go on. I took the headlight off and made a hole on the plastic and the relay was not there. What can it be, since I read the 2004 does not come with that relay module. I also read the it comes with 2 sensors? I know the one on the thermostat housing, but where is the other one? Where?
Anybody have any ideas what to do??? Thanks in advanced!!
