2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo transmission fluid
Jeep has the 42Re transmission, with 156k on it. I dropped the pan and changed filter (Hastings Filter) refilled with ATF4 fluid so far I have added 6 quarts of fluid. I changed the fluid cold. Is this why it is taking so much fluid?, it shifts good there were no problems with it I did this as a maintain the transmission do not know the prior history of the transmission. Oh I also put a new pan on it with drain plug!

I think as long as you are checking the level using the correct procedure all should be well.
Drive the Jeep to bring it up to normal operating temperature.
Drive the Jeep to bring it up to normal operating temperature.
- Keep the engine running (idling) for at least one minute before checking the level.
- Make sure the jeep stands straight on the ground level.
- Clean the dipstick area to avoid dirt from falling into the transmission
- While the engine is running and the transmission is in “N” (torque converter fills in N (NEUTRAL))
- Pull the dipstick of the transmission and verify that the oil is in the upper range (between the 2 upper dots). If the fluid is cold, then it should be between the 2 lower dots.

For your Jeep, the transmission fluid stops being pumped when the gear selector is in park (P). It has to be in neutral for when checking the transmission fluid level. If the dipstick only has minimum and maximum marks, then it should be in between those two marks. It needs to be checked at operating temperature while the Jeep is on and idling. It needs to have been put through all of the gears just prior to checking it.
Make sure to set the parking brake.

Thanks Noah, I did check it after running it putting it in the gears and then stopped in neutral. I understand that the fluid after sitting for a long time drains back into pan when you start to go after sitting for a few days the converter starves for fluid at first then goes. If I used it everyday it starts off fine, this is why I drained the fluid cold.

You are welcome. As always, I enjoy conversing with you. I like hearing that your Grand Cherokee is running well.

Old fart with a wrench
Best case scenario, after the first start in the morning, shift to neutral and give it at least a minute or two to warm up and the pump to start circulating fluid before you ask it to move the vehicle. The older the trans gets, the harder the o-rings get and leak pressure before they warm up and seal. In extreme cases and extremely cold temps, they can cause a governor pressure CEL.
