Default 2004 Grand Cherokee Power Steering Fluid

I’m really confused and maybe someone out there can educate me. The manual for my 2004 Grand Cherokee Freedom edition
says to use MS-5931 power steering fluid. I’ve looked at quite a bit of info on the web, spoke with dealers (who also seem a bit confused about this), looked in the forums and still don’t seem to have a good answer other than some saying MS-9602 now supercedes the MS-5931. My concern is that many of the forums say you shouldn’t use the 9602 to top off or add to the 5931.
So should the current MS-5931 fluid be drained (if so how) and then refilled with the 9602? I would appreciate your help as there doesn’t seem to be any sort of clear answer to this that I’ve been able to find. J

First of all, welcome to CF!

That's a good question and also a confusing one. I see from your signature block, you have the 4.7. If it also has the hydraulic cooling fan, you'll need MS-10838 which is a special hydraulic fluid. My '00 4.0 is supposed to take MS-5931 but the dealer tells me it's been superseded by MS-9602. He gave me his last 2 quarts of the 5931 just to get it out of his inventory. I changed mine by sucking out the reservoir several times and refilling it. I didn't want to get any air in the system. What was in it, I don't know because it was black! Now my pump is whining but only when turning the wheels when stopped. Some of the XJ guys say they use ATF+4.

SO, to rap it up, I haven't gotten an answer myself. My dealer's parts manager searched his computer for a while and found mine was supposed to use the MS-5931. He said later years used MS-9602. It's all a freaking mystery and nobody seems to be willing to take responsibility.

It doesn't really do THAT much, so I just drained and filled mine with Advanced Auto "MOPAR Steering fluid" It was clear mineral oil. I did the same by sucking the res empty repeatedly over a few months. It's pretty clear now. 171K on a 99 XJ.

When I really looked at mine it was black! It's hard to tell because the tank and dipstick are black and until I wiped it off on a paper towel, I didn't see it was black. Whatever was in it was working fine, just discolored. Now, the pump moans when you crank the wheels when you're stopped. All I was trying to do was make it last as long as possible. I guess my dad was right. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Default PS Fluid dilemma

Hi!
I am new to this site. My issue is I own a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L. I had a power steering leak and am now trying to figure out what ps fluid to put as for 1999-2004 models my remaining bottle says ms-5931. Unfortunatley, being in Sri Lanka this Mopar fluid is not available as heard its been discontinued some time ago. Some say to use ATF+4 but heard it is not advisable to use in this vehicle due hydraulic fan and it can ruin the pump. I cannot get a OEM for ms-5931 either here. I am not sure what Jeep is using for older models as too ms-6902 is for newer models. I have seen Mopar Power Steering Fluid +4 but not sure if this can be used on my vehicle. Any ideas out there? Thanks.
