Default 249 tc issues possible front end damage

so my gf bought her wj and the drivshaft was in the backseat. I am assuming the viscous coupler is damaged based on my reading around....i want to put a 242 in!

but, we got a weird grind going on when throttle is half open: accelerating and decelerating...sounds like from the front end...it had a transmission put in about a year ago...its pops when it goes into first gear sometimes worse than other times...front drive shaft has some wobble but had never been used when we put it in....so im thinking po drove no front shaft for 10 years and tc is not properly working and its causing the front end grind? I was already not stoked about the tc but now a front axle?...maybe I will let her trade it in instead....any input muchly appreciated....thanks, james

Woa, same exact scenario with mine I believe. What do you think?

Bought a zj driveshaft was in backseat.
(ran perfect, no vibes, no grinds, no hooping/chirping etc...)

I get the front driveshaft re-balanced and installed by a shop. Now I get the grind/vibration at 10mph and at 30mph when braking or coasting at those speeds. (it's not the rotors, had them checked and you don't feel any vibe in brakes at all) also have bad chirping now when turning.

I'm sure my VC is bad (I have a 231 waiting to be rebuilt), but I'm also thinking my front end is shot. It almost sounds like the same exact prob??

The more I think about it.... Maybe it is JUST the T case and not the front end. Because I only had the grind after the front driveshaft was installed. If our front ends were bad, wouldn't we feel the grind the entire time since the wheels are still moving? That's probably a newb question, I'm still learning.

I dunno if u need the shaft. I would just try to get a tcase with the same build year or similar just to be on the safe side. Let us know how it goes and if the t case swap solves the prob.

front from donor measures same but is straight shaft and does not have ujoint...rear seemed to measure half inch shorter... will that make difference? or should I grab both shafts...the front has nice little dent...would that be okay?

I think the shorter shaft will cause a vibration, but someone else feel free to chime in I'm just barely getting my training wheels off. Lol.

To bring this back to life I got the 242 in finally a couple days ago...i never split it open to check any thing....the inputs on both cases were the same so it went in fine but that rear driveshaft from the 247 is a couple inches too long...and I was dumb and didnt grab the one with the 242...

I did find one from a member at jeep forum and its being shipped now. Got the front driveshaft in and pulled the wj up and reversed a couple feet in 4wd and it moved so thats good but just got to get the rear ds in and see how everything runs.
