Hey folks, I just bought a 2004 Grand Cherokee Limited. From what I have read, the diffs should be a Dana 44A rear and a Dana 30 front. Howsoever, the VIN decoder on this site tells me I have a Dana 30 front and a Dana 35C rear. In trying to research the differences, I see a lot of differing information, so I thought I'd try asking here. After viewing a number of threads I still wasn't sure.

So, from the shape, it appears to be a Dana 44, however, it has a rubber plug, rather than a threaded steel plug. The images I find for a Dana 35 show an oval cover, whereas mine is shaped like every other Dana 44. In the photo, you will also note some scrapes that reveal what I think is aluminum on the housing. Again, I'm pretty sure I have a 44A, but the VIN decoder tells me I have a 35C. I am certain the rear axle has not been changed out.

Can anybody tell me definitively what I have and why the VIN decoder might be wrong?

Yeah. I saw that, but was confused because my VIN seems to indicate my rear axle is a 35C, so I thought maybe there was a variant of the D35 that looks like the 44A. Happily, that is not the case. Thanks for the input. Learning as I go.
