Default 4.0 zj water pump some things broke :-/

4.0 zj, I've had a coolant leak for the three years I've had this truck. I decided to throw a new pump on and it leaked bad so I tore it down again and was extra carefully cleaning everything. This time on tightening there was a 'ping' and the right hand bolt just spins. I've searched , seems like stuff like this happens a bit 🙄 unfortunately I had a work call out and now it's dark so I am here reading old threads, I found this pick, really hoping this hasn't happened but the owner describes exactly what happened to me .

any advice or help is appreciated, I may fill with water and even maybe the pump is sealed who knows !

I looked this morning, this has indeed happened, the whole right side of the threaded hole has gone , thinking if this rain lets up I could weld a stud to the block 🤔

The block is cast iron. Cast iron embrittles and cracks when welded by traditional methods.

Cast iron can be welded by a specialty welder if they are trained for it and have the right equipment. A new engine will be cheaper.

Is there enough material left for a Heli-coil and J-B Weld ?
Can the hole be drilled through for the next size smaller bolt and nut ?
A grade 10.0 bolt the next size down should have no problem handling the torque of the original bolt.

Take a picture of the damage and let's see what you have to work with.

I've done a lot of reading indeed welding cast iron did not seem like a great idea 💡

This is looking down onto the right hand side bolt , smashed the right hand threaded wall away to oblivion!

Fyi I am right hand drive, there's a bracket for the power steering that attaches to the water pump too, as 3 out of 4 bolts were good , instead of the bracket mounting flush I have inserted some washes between the bracket and water pump effectively pushing the pump into the block .
hope it holds !!
