Totally agree, that is definitely invalid data in my opinion considering the Jeep was stopped and the tractor trailer was going 65mph but I think the people died from impact and not the fire like the media wants us to believe. Also, right before Thanksgiving 2012 here in CT a tractor trailer slammed into a Nissan SUV that was stopped in traffic on the highway and I think I remember a family friend who's state trooper said the truck driver fell asleep...anyway the Nissan SUV caught fire also but the driver died on scene from the IMPACT not the fire...so I guess we should get the government to recall millions of Nissan SUVs that can catch fire from an incident that happens so rarely????....Also, like it was mentioned before above driving is a risk we take every single day. I personally support Chrysler because it seems the data that was presented with this isn't good enough to prove that millions of Jeep ZJs, WJs, and Liberty's are going to catch fire in a rear end collision....

Caracticus Potts The Mod
After more than 25 years behind the wheel of a wrecker, many of theose times at a crash site, I can tell you for a certainty that it has nothing to do with where the tank is located. I have thousands of photos of hundreds of different makes and models that have burst into flames and I towed them. Only one time I can remember the death was a result of the fire and not the crash, older man was pined and the car was upside down on an embankment, the brake fluid leaked onto the hot manifold and the car caught fire, the man died because the EMS/FF's and myself did not get there fast enough.......my heart still goes out to his family and that of the two officers and bystander who struggled to try and free the man.
News/Media groups love to blow this stuff out of scale and work everyone up....it sells papers and airtime.

Millions of vehicles sold over the last 20 years and 55 deaths, that is less than 1%. It's sad that 55 people died, but I don't blame the vehicle. Now if every Grand Cherokee would burst into flames if it were to be involved in a minor rear end collusion, I may blame the design.

Old fart with a wrench
You know, 100 years ago, people thought gasoline was too volatile to use as a motor fuel. We learned how to handle it safely, but it still is dangerous. Nobody said it was completely safe to drive a car and a crash is one of those things that sometimes happens no matter how you drive.
I'm not going to worry about my Jeep's gas tank. Period.
Think about all those old pickups with the tank under the seat!

I reached out to your forum several months ago but did not get much response. I am the creator of the petition online with the 126,000 signatures asking NHTSA to force Chrysler to do the right things and stop people from burning to death. It is great that this is making national headlines but sadly, this isn't happening fast enough. Over 3 years of studies by NHTSA has cost another life. A gentleman in Houston Texas burned to death just this week when his Jeep was rear ended.
Please go to change.org/dangerousjeeps and sign this petition. Then please tell a friend. Thank you.
For the skeptics, I applaud your need of facts. There is an entire section under NEWS on the petition page that is a long list of links to supporting documents for your review.

Maybe a slight exageration, although I think $200 is on the cheap side. Still though. You want to push this so hard to fix these people's vehicles. For what? A tank skid and a hitch aren't going to guarantee that it won't be rearended hard enough to bust the tank.
If you want to make the road safer go make a petition to crack down on cell phone use while driving. Or how bout making it harder to get your license in the first place? If you're spending thousands on this, out of pocket, you're a fool. Go do something useful.

2.7 Million vehicles x $200 to fix each = $540,000,000 aka Jeep being sold again.

Not all of the 2.7 million vehicles recalled will need a hitch and skid plate, only those that don't already have them. Mine will not need anything to be done to it. But it will still cost Chrysler a butt load of money, and that cost will be passed onto the consumer in new vehicle purchases.
I know the figures weren't exact but at any rate it wouldn't be cheap, that was my point.
