95 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0
Hello gang, just found a 95 Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 L 2WD, Tranny is recently rebuilt, right after that permits ended 2018 it hasn't been used since then, I refilled the radiator but it leaks from the back of the engine head freeze Plug and one right below the injectors 1,2, I can replace that no problem, my question is the intake manifold, can I use the intake from the 4.0L H.O. with no mods or do I have to modify something else? Just to be sure this model didn't have the Japanese tranny right? This Laredo came with a different tranny or am I wrong? Thanks in advance TP............

Dunno for sure, but there's a sticky at the top of the Cherokee forum that lays out the interchangeability of engines and transmissions across the various years and models. Your answer might be in there.

You can use the intake manifold from an HO up until 98, then they changed them for the WJ with the 0331 head. The accessories mount differently on bosses drilled into the manifold, notably the power steering pump. The 99s also use a spring loaded belt idler. Actually any 4.0L after 91 was an HO. Previous to that they were Renix with EGR valves.
The ZJ uses the 42re Chrysler transmission with the 4.0L. It uses ATF+4 fluid which you may have trouble finding in Puerto Rico. ATF+4 supersedes ATF+3 which is what your jeep originally used. DO NOT use Dex/Merc.

I have always found it easier to just start off with a part you know will fit rather than waste time hoping to cram something else in. Intakes are common and readily available at the junk yards, I would start there.

Why would you want to change the intake manifold? The only one that supposedly flows better is the one from the WJ which isn't any better and will cause problems with accessory mounting. I don't understand how it's supposed to flow better since it's mated to the 0331 head which has smaller valve ports in the head itself! Don't mess with something that already works! The 4.0 isn't a high performance motor. It's a torquey tractor engine! Pulling stumps type power. Torque start dropping off at 3000 rpm. What high performance motor does that?

195 hp! Thats great! I always thought the 4.0L was 190hp.
I know on the WJ, even right off idle RPMs it doesn't even need you to really apply any gas to accelerate. It just goes... Right along it generally will keep crawling forward while riding on irregular terrain. Even keeps rolling right up steeper inclines for the most part. There are some exceptions,. Deeper sand is one of them.. sand would challenge the RWD WJ 4.0 that I drive from continuing to just keep going forward.
