I'm going to try dragging the broken bolt out first because the rear is already loosly in the jeep. If I can't get the bolts to thread into the yoke then I'll have to find someone with an impact gun to help me swap the yokes.

Ok, I'm about at my whits end with this jeep. I couldn't get the yoke bolt out so I decided to swap the yoke. The old yoke had a 1 1/8" nut, and the new rear's yoke nut is bigger than 32mm.
On top of that, the track bar on the new rear is shorter than the old rear.
I also noticed the new rear seems to have a vent hose the comes off the top of the axle tube that the old rear didn't have.
The parts yard swears this rear came out of a 96 grand, and I've checked both tags, they are both d35 with 3.73s.
If I can figure out what size nut the new rear has on the yoke, am I going to be able to swap that and the track bar, or do I have the wrong rear here?

Seeing as you already have the yoke out, why don't you drill out the bolt, and install some u-bolts? I've never tried it on the GC, but my Cherokee was simple to do. Stronger that way as well.

'96-'98 V8 ZJ's came with a D44a, with 3.73 gears. It has an aluminum center section. Any chance he gave you that axle by mistake?

No aluminum. And the pumpkin plate says d35 with 373.
The rear seems to be the same accept for the vent hole in the axel tube, the larger yoke bolt, and the shorter track bar.
I have no idea what size that yoke nut is but its way bigger then the 1 1/8" nut that came off the yoke on the blown rear.

Ok, these are definitely NOT the same rears.

Help. Am I screwed here? The gears are both 3.73, but the yoke nut on the new rear is WAY bigger than the 1 1/8" nut on the blown rear, and the track bar on the new rear is shorter that the one that came off the truck.

Just called the junkyard. They have the correct rear. Apparently the first guy I dealt with is a *******, this guy apologized profusely and is going to swap the rear for me tomorrow with no issues. Inconvenient, but I should've checked the diff cover before I left the yard. My bad on that one. At least the issues I'm having aren't because I'm an idiot with a wrench! Lol. Was starting to wonder!

Old fart with a wrench
I believe the D44a, the a meaning aluminum, was used in jeeps while the D44 was used in Dodge trucks. I think.

That was my thought that it possibly came out of a truck originally and could have made its way to the jeep sometime before the junkyard got it. Either way, they're swapping it for me, just lost a lot of time on it so far which is aggravating. But at least I know now it isn't me being a ******* with a wrench! And hopefully I'll have it done today. Finally.
