97 Cherokee dies after a few seconds!

i told the guy how to reset it. He says tried the rest and said the blinking does slow down after about 12 sec. The first time he tried it the alarm came on and he shut that off an tried again all seemed well but still only runs for a few secs. I'd say it's the key.
